The Proto Shield makes it easy to design custom circuits on an UNO-size board. Solder through-hole or SMD ICs on the prototyping area to test them with your Arduino; the SMD area takes up to a 24-pin SOIC package, and the through-hole area leaves plenty of room. You can also stick a mini breadboard (not included) on top for solderless work.
